Generator Types

First, we must address the two types of generators: standby vs. portable units.

Standby Generators

Standby generators are stationary whole-house generators designed to provide reliable power to a home for up to several days depending on their size, fuel source, and power demands. Standby generators are made for long span power emergencies and use an Automatic Transfer Switch to automatically kick on during an outage.

If in great condition, this type of generator can power a medium sized home for up to 3,000 hours in total. So, if you have several power outages a year at an average runtime of 30 hours per outage, plus maintenance time, your generator can last a very long time. It is recommended not to run your generator for more than 500 hours straight.

Portable Generators

Portable generators can typically run for up to 2,000 hours in total. Portable units are much smaller than standby generators and must be operated manually. They are designed to run for shorter increments, such as 6-18 hours at a time.

They aren’t designed to power your whole house but can come in handy if you own an RV or need to power a select few appliances at home during an emergency outage. Overall, portable generators are not recommended for long-term use during an extended power outage.

Fuel types

Natural Gas

Whole-house generators often run directly off your natural gas line at home and connect into the utility line for an unending supply of fuel. In this case, generators that run off natural gas are typically able to run the longest. There is no fuel tank to refill, so as long as the gas line is operating, the generator will have fuel.

Propane

Propane is a common fuel source for generators. Propane has a very long shelf life compared to diesel and gas. This means you won’t have to worry about the propane in the tank going bad. Propane generators must be refueled every once in a while, making it harder to run continuously.

Diesel

Diesel generators are less common. Their runtime relies on how much diesel you can feasibly access and store in tanks. Diesel can also be expensive at times, prohibiting some owners from having an ample supply.

One more factor impacts generator runtime, and that’s load size. Your generator is only able to handle a certain electrical load. The closer you get to that limit, the harder your generator must work.
